Excel Academy of Roseland Students Artwork on Display

Recently, eight students from the Excel Academy of Roseland, part of the Chicago Public Schools’ Options Network, had the opportunity to showcase their artwork and get a taste of the Big Easy in the Windy City. The students, along with some of their loved ones, attended the first annual Mardi Gras for Mental Health Gala hosted by a local nonprofit organization, the Idell-McCarthy Foundation For Second Chances, at the historical Stan Mansion. San Diego Sockers legend and current team captain Kraig Chiles joined the Sierra sports program on the field to run an amazing soccer clinic. Students rotated through five station stations to work on a variety of soccer skills. The students were excited to meet a professional soccer player and watch him show case his skills at the conclusion of the clinic against our very own coach, Shane Dillon. Recognizing Educators Who Support Special and Alternative Education Students

By Dawn Thomas, President of SESI As Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week ends, I wanted to highlight a certain segment within the K-12 education sector that’s close to my heart, the exceptional professionals devoted to the world of special and alternative education. Sierra School of Alhambra empowers students to serve their community

As April comes to its close, so does National Autism Awareness Month for the students and teachers at Sierra School of Alhambra. Here, young people of all learning abilities are encouraged to meet their full potential. And that’s a big mission on a campus that serves students ages 8 through 22, from the Los Angeles Unified School District and other school districts in the San Gabriel Valley. The students at Sierra have learning, behavioral or social/emotional challenges that benefit from a structured setting rather than the open form of a large, mainstream public school. But that doesn’t make the learning any less relevant or [...]
