The High Road Schools of Hartford welcomed Nurse Cavalari as a new staff member this fall! When faced with needing a lesson on hygiene in one of our classrooms, Nurse C as she likes to be called, stepped up to the plate.

With the help of our student Kiara, Nurse C. began by assembling hygiene bags for each student in the fifth-year transition classroom to take home. They were able to send each student home with a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, a bar of soap and a deodorant.

Nurse C. had an open conversation about personal hygiene from a nurse’s perspective. One of the take-aways from her talk was how important it is to brush and floss your teeth every day. She carefully explained that ignoring oral hygiene can lead to gum disease. Then the bacteria can go directly into the bloodstream and carried to the heart which could ultimately impact your heart’s health. As she was speaking to the class, she was also having the students help her create a bulletin board. As you can see, the lesson and the bulletin board were a success!
